Some songs just sound like what their titles suggest, like this new one from Velvet Penny. “Hot Air Balloon” is the Los Angeles-based artist’s brand new single, which we are fortunate enough to premiere today. The song features a carnival kind of sound and feel to it, with very festive tones, and the sound of children having fun. It feels like a bit of an adventure, like an exciting, even somewhat nerve-wracking experience. In writing the song, Velvet Penny made sure to maintain some playful vibes throughout.

Velvet faz questão de dizer que esse é o início de uma nova fase. Seu primeiro álbum, All the flowers (2023), tinha um clima mais sombrio e foi gravado com músicos contratados. Já Hot air balloon nasce da colaboração com sua atual banda – sete músicos que a acompanham desde o último compacto. A letra fala sobre liberdade artística e sobre um novo universo, onde tudo é possível e ela se sente flutuando, e leve como o ar. Sim, uma música que poderia estar em algum disco da fase inicial de Rita Lee (como Hoje é o primeiro dia do resto da sua vida, de 1972).

…”you do feel transported back in time or maybe side stepped into another universe of sorts. You feel pain but it is tempered by a surreal sense of pure escapism. It feels highly cinematic with peaks of animation coming in. I thought of a scattered, varied cast of image makers from Germaine Dulac to Alejandro Jodorowsky to Bob Fosse to Wes Anderson to Walt Disney and an equally varied cast of sound makers from Flamingo Shadow to Unknown Mortal Orchestra to Brian Wilson to Rodgers and Hammerstein, sprinkled with St. Vincent and Jonny Greenwood. It is all so dreadfully beautiful and moving, maybe the kind of place you go to when trauma waits outside your door (figuratively or literally).”

The single, set to release Friday, June 6th on 7” format, is a split with fellow Psych band Sol Societe, who are contributing their previously released digital single, “Sambido.” Together, the groups have teamed up with emerging Psych label Psylk Rdand lathe-cut house After Hours Records to bring this summer’s heat.
