Pop-Up Book & Deluxe Vinyl Release
‘Carousel Dreams’ is a 12” pop-up book made in collaboration with illustrator and pop-up artist– Julie Gaynes and artrock musician–Velvet Penny. The pop-up book serves as a deluxe release of ‘Carousel Dreams’ the band’s full length album pressed on 12” vinyl. Inside a pocket of the pop-up book readers will find the 12” vinyl alongside ghostly, taboo and mutilating interactive illustrations; fine interpretations of the feelings pulsing through the songs’ meanings.
Depicted in storybook fashion are themes of introspection, emptiness, offering, death and transformation, threaded by a red rope strung by a spider. Thick with symbolism, the finished booklet is a perfect centerpiece for a gothic dinner party where the artworks and music can be shared and enjoyed again and again.

Our Team
Julie Gaynes is an instructor and PhD Candidate at UCLA who explores how interactive books can turn subversive narratives into tactile experiences. A researcher and storyteller, Gaynes draws on medieval illuminated manuscripts for inspiration on how paper art can become portals into the private lives of others. Inspired by her four years of living and teaching religious studies and creative writing in Indonesia, she channels surreal aesthetics in her work to bring out the beauty in darkness, the playfulness in the occult.
